Healthy Lifestyle Change
Release date:  06-30-2002
NORWICH:  Evidently, sometimes all it takes to get on the path to good health, is pain in your back and a counseling session with your primary care provider.  At least that's what started Letha Cole's quest for improved health six months ago.  Since that time, Letha has adopted a healthier lifestyle, which has made her a happier and healthier person.  Interviewed recently at the office of Anthony Sepe, Clinical Dietitian  at Chenango Memorial Hospital, Letha said the story really started with a complaint about lower back pain.  After diagnostic imaging, her primary care physician at the CMH Family Health Center in Norwich, Lorraine Seddon, MD, referred her to the C. V. Stratton Center for Therapies for a fitness program, then to a CMH- Dietitian for dietary counseling to help stabilize her blood sugar levels, lower her lipids, lose weight, and lower her blood pressure.  Letha said that first appointment with dietitian Anthony Sepe really made a difference in her overall lifestyle choices to become healthier.  "I've had appointments with Anthony every week since then.  He encourages me and gives me tips about how I can maintain good nutrition with good-tasting foods and maintain my weight loss and blood sugar stability, since I am a diabetic."  Now fifty pounds lighter, Letha says, "I walk regularly and I go to the Stratton Center 3 times a week for additional exercise on their machines.  I have more energy; my blood sugar has stabilized; my cholesterol level is lower; and my blood pressure has improved."  Anthony says, "Letha is an ideal patient.  She is motivated to do what it takes to achieve her goals.  It's a pleasure to work with her."  As for Letha, when asked what motivated her to make the changes she has made, she said, "I did it for myself."  Maybe that's exactly the attitude we all should have to help us stay healthy !
